This material has been used for carving for thousands of years. Especially loved by the Ancient Egyptians, sculptures have been found dating back to 1300BC.
Many beautiful vessels and carvings were discovered in the Pharoahs' tombs, and were found to have contained precious perfumes and oils.

It is the Alabaster found in Egypt which is particularly beautiful once carved. Colours vary from yellows to creams with the distinctive banding giving each piece a unique appearance.
Rough stone, as seen below, is mined throughout Egypt and worked using mainly traditional methods in small workshops.
Sadly, many of these workshops have been affected by the reduced numbers of people visiting the country since 2011 due to political unrest.
